Pi Sigma Alpha Honor Society Does It Again!

We are proud to report that our Pi Sigma Alpha, The Political Science Honor Society, chapter at UTEP has been named one of the three Best Chapters at institutions with enrollments between 15,000 and 25,000 for 2012-2013! This is the third time our epsilon epsilon chapter has earned this award. These awards recognize particularly active departmental chapters that exhibit high levels of energy and creativity in furthering the goals of the honor society. This award also recognizes the extraordinary leadership and dedication to the student organization by Dr. Taeko Hiroi, the faculty advisor to the chapter.

Annual Highlights
Dr. Charles Boehmer published an article on economic development and domestic terrorism with MA program alumnus Mark Daube in Peace Economics, Peace Science and Public Policy. He also served his second year as Chair of the Graduate Council, the faculty governance body for graduate studies at UTEP.
Dr. Gaspare M. Genna published a co-edited volume with Dr. David Mayer Foulkes titled, North American Integration: An Institutional Void in Migration, Security and Development (Routledge) as well as a chapter in this book. A previous journal article with Dr. Philippe de Lombaerde, “The Small N Methodological Challenges of Analyzing Regional Integration,” was reprinted in an edited volume, Regionalism (Sage). He also published a short article in German Studies Reviewregarding Germany’s role in the European Union economic crisis. He participated in a residential workshop on faculty development in Chinese studies, held at the East-West Center in Hawaii, in summer 2013.
Dr. Taeko Hiroi published four articles on various topics in Revista Conexão Política, The Journal of Politics in Latin America (with Dr. Pedro Neiva), The Journal of Social Science, and Politics & Policy(with Dr. Sawa Omori). Three more articles are forthcoming and a monograph with Dr. Lucio Renno, titled, Obstrução e Processo Decisório na Câmara dos Deputados: 1991 a 2010, was also published in Brazil. During the summer, Dr. Hiroi participated in a residential workshop on faculty development in Chinese studies, held at the East-West Center in Hawaii.
Dr. Greg Schmidt presented a paper, “Gender Disparities in Re-Election: The 2006 and 2010-2011 Electoral Cycles in Peru,” at the XXXI International Congress of the Latin American Studies Association in Washington, D.C., on May 31. At the annual meeting of the American Political Science Association in Chicago, he presented a second paper, “Preference Voting and the Election of Women in Peru: Characteristics, Trends, Variables, and Counterfactual Comparisons” on August 30.
Dr. Cigdem Sirin published a journal article in Turkish Studies and another article in Terrorism and Political Violence (with Dr. Nehemia Geva). In addition to her publications, she presented two papers at the annual meetings of the Midwest Political Science Association and Western Political Science Association. She was also appointed to President Natalicio’s Women’s Advisory Council.
Dr. Kathleen Staudt gave presentations at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder) and began dialogues on border studies collaboration. She also co-edited (with Dr. Tony Payan and Dr. Tony Kruszewski), A War That Can’t Be Won (University of Arizona Press). Best of all, she was named the Endowed Professor of Western Hemispheric Trade Policy Studies!
Dr. José Villalobos published a journal article in Administration & Society, a book chapter in A War That Can’t Be Won (University of Arizona Press), and two book reviews. He also served as speaker for The League of United Latin American Citizens’ District IV Immigration Reform Town Hall, Executive Politics section chair for the Western Political Science Association’s Annual Meeting, and Executive Board member and website manager for the Presidents & Executive Politics section of the American Political Science Association
